Theft reported

PAXINOS - State police at Stonington are investigating a theft at the residence of Luther Baskin, 85, of Shamokin Township.

Police said someone opened Baskin's gun safe and removed $3,000 in cash and a ring.

Fleeing and eluding

SUNBURY - State police at Stonington reported they took Dane Earl Albertson Jr. into custody Tuesday evening after he allegedly fled when police attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Route 61 east of Oaklyn in Upper Augusta Township.

Police said Albertson, who was driving a Dodge Neon, continued to flee while turning on Race Street and continuing on North 11th Street. He was taken into custody by state police in the area near Sunbury Hospital.

Little Mahanoy crash

LITTLE MAHANOY TOWNSHIP - Two people sustained injuries in an accident that occurred Sept. 9 on Creek Road in Little Mahanoy Township.

They were identified as Korrine Anderson, 22, of Dornsife, driver of the vehicle, and Brandon L. Foulds, 20, of Dornsife, a passenger. A one-year-old male passenger was uninjured.

According to state police at Stonington, the crash occurred when the vehicle, negotiating a curve, left its lane and crossed into the oncoming lane of Creek Road. The vehicle then struck a tree.

Theft by deception

TREVORTON - State police at Stonington reported Sue Ellen Shroyer, 34, of Trevorton, is the victim of theft by deception.

Trooper Nathan R. Messner said the crime occurred when an unknown person posed as a loan agency for school loans and requested that Shroyer send a money gram. The incident occurred Sept. 1.

Rush Township crash

RUSH TOWNSHIP - State police at Stonington investigated a two-vehicle crash at around 4 p.m. Sept. 3 on Route 54 in Rush Township near the intersection with Union Corners Road.

Trooper Nicholas Berger reported the accident occurred when a vehicle, operated by Nicole M. Hartman, 34, of Danville, stopped to turn into a driveway, and was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Vince M. Solomon, 32, of Danville.

Not injured

LOWER AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP - The driver was not injured in a one-vehicle accident that occurred Sept. 6 on East Ridge Road in Lower Augusta Township.

State police at Stonington reported the accident happened when a car driven by Travis L. Long, 27, of Sunbury, went off the road and struck a tree.

Theft from vehicle

LOWER AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP - Jason Allen Michael, 34, of Tower City, was identified by state police at Stonington as the victim of a theft from a motor vehicle.

The crime occurred along Route 147 at Selinsgrove Junction in Lower Augusta Township.

Trooper Daniel J. Wilk reported some damaged the driver's side window on Michael's vehicle and removed $200 in cash and two cell phones.

Criminal mischief

SUNBURY - State police at Stonington are investigating an incident of criminal mischief at the Sunbury Social Club in which someone damaged the engine and ignition of a pontoon boat docked there.

The boat owner was identified as Debra English, of Sunbury.

Firearm stolen

SHAMOKIN - A firearm belonging to Jason Donald Leiser was taken at 261 Didiums Lane.

Theft reported

SUNBURY - A Stihl 441 chainsaw and a Craftsman hedge trimmer were removed from the property of Anthony Benedict, of 3019 State Route 61, Sunbury, in the early part of July.

False identification

SUNBURY - Jose Colon, 36, of Lebanon, has been charged by state police at Stonington with false identification to law enforcement.

According to state police, Colon, a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for a traffic violation Sept. 8 at Market and Fifth streets, Sunbury, provided a false name and date of birth.

Colon was transported to Snyder County Prison where he was held on a Lebanon County warrant.

Harassment

HERNDON - State police at Stonington charged Michael Anthony Lawrence Jr., 35, of Herndon, with harassment for an incident that occurred Sept. 8 in the borough.

According to state police, a verbal confrontation took place between Lawrence and a 33-year-old Herndon woman. State police allege Lawrence subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact.

Harassment

KULPMONT - Tina Hengst, of Shamokin, and Andrea Bishop, of Kulpmont, have been charged by state police at Stonington with harassment as a result of an incident that occurred Sept. 6 at 1339 Scott St.

According to state police, the two engaged in a verbal argument that turned into a physical assault on each other.

Guilty plea

SHAMOKIN - Calye Goldman, 26, of 107 Nottingham Drive, Elysburg, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a summary of false reports and was ordered by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III to pay a $200 fine plus costs.

Goldman was charged by Shamokin Cpl. Bryan Primerano with falsely reporting July 11 that her grandmother's vehicle was damaged by a hit-and-run driver. She provided verbal and written statements to police before allegedly confessing that she lent it to a friend who reportedly caused the damage.

Charges dismissed

SHAMOKIN - Charges of simple assault and harassment filed against Louis Baez, 24, of 69 S. Oak St., Coal Township, were dismissed Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III when his mother, Andrea Baez, refused to testify against him.

Baez was charged by Coal Township Patrolman Chad Yoder with pushing open a door that struck his mother in the head, causing a laceration above her right eye that required her to seek hospital treatment.

At Tuesday's preliminary hearing, Andrea Baez said, "I begged the officer and I'm begging the court that I 100 percent do not want to testify against my son and I do not want the charges to proceed. He is my caretaker and I want him home."

SHAMOKIN - Donald E. Cooper Jr., 57, of 14 S. Franklin St., Shamokin, was cited by Patrolman Raymond Siko II for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct after being found passed out at Commerce and Rock streets near The News-Item at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Joseph R. McClain-Broden, 26, of Mount Carmel, was cited by Patrolman Matthew Hashuga for retail theft for allegedly stealing $31.93 worth of merchandise from Walmart Supercenter at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 13.

Guilty pleas

MOUNT CARMEL - Two defendants pleaded guilty Wednesday to different charges and were ordered by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones to pay fines and costs.

Timothy C. Heddings, 56, of 127 Sudol Road, Danville, pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs and placed on supervised probation for six months. Two counts of disorderly conduct and charges of simple assault and harassment were withdrawn.

Heddings was charged by Riverside Officer Timothy Kiefaber with using obscene language in front of two children and hitting Daniel Hess with a stick multiple times in the face, neck and head July 10 outside Hess' residence at 123 Sudol Road, Danville.

Mary B. Goodlunas, 42, of 211 S. Poplar St., Mount Carmel, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay a $200 fine plus costs and placed on supervised probation for 12 months.

Goodlunas was charged by Mount Carmel Cpl. David Donkochik in connection with a July 16 incident in her block.

Endangers child

MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP - Emilio T. Spurgeon, 26, of 713 Scott St., Kulpmont, was charged by Patrolman Kelly Campbell with endangering the welfare of children, recklessly endangering another person, driving under suspension, failure to have a 3-year-old child strapped in a car seat and failure to wear a seat belt.

The charges relate to an Aug. 31 incident on State Route 2034 (Brennan's Farm Road) near Shady Acres.

Multiple charges

MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP - Frederick T. Holmes Jr., 47, of 211 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, has been charged in two criminal complaints with theft and burglary-related offenses.

Holmes is charged by Patrolman Kelly Campbell with burglary, two counts of criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and possessing instruments of crime. He is accused of entering a property at 422 N. Maple St. and stealing pruning shears, a flashlight, a roll of electrical tape, a sewing kit, an American flag, a camouflage cooler bag, a maraca, a propane cylinder and a bottle of all-purpose glue.

Holmes also is charged by Chief of Police Brian Hollenbush with theft by deception for allegedly failing to install porch carpeting at 137-139 W. Saylor St., Atlas, after receiving a downpayment check in June for $761.84 from Lisa D'Amico to do the work.

Alleged child abuse

MOUNT CARMEL - Steven R. Markowitz, 46, of 40 S. Vine St., Mount Carmel, was charged by Cpl. David Donkochik with two counts of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person involving an April 19 incident at his home.

Markowitz is accused of placing his 3-month-old son in a vibrating chair after the infant continued to cry. Police said Markowitz turned the vibration mode on and after a minute or two, he noticed something wasn't right since the child's right arm was "out of whack or twitching."

Markowitz told police he then left the child downstairs as he went to get his girlfriend and the infant's mother, Leann Emburg, who was upstairs. After Emburg came down to check on the child, Markowitz dialed 911 for an ambulance after realizing abnormal behavior from the child.

The child was transported by ambulance April 19 to the emergency room at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and during a visit two days later to Geisinger Knapper Clinic, it was suspected that the infant was having seizures.

Upon further testing, medical officials determined the child's injuries were consistent with child abuse rather than being accidental.

DUI

RUSH TOWNSHIP - Trooper Jared Mowen of state police at Stonington has charged Andrew S. Kusnerick, 52, of 562 Middle Road, Elysburg, with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to drive in a single lane and careless driving relating to an Aug. 14 traffic stop on Route 54 near High Road.

Police said Kusnerick had a blood-alcohol content of .149 percent.

DUI charges

SHAMOKIN - Banks E. Mull, 86, of 170 E. Dewart St., P.O. Box 3, Shamokin, was charged by Trooper David Boucher of state police at Stonington with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to have a signed registration card, a turn signal violation, careless driving and failure to wear a seat belt.

Police said the charges relate to an Aug. 21 incident in a parking lot at an apartment building at North Orange and Dewart streets.

Police reported Mull had a blood-alcohol content of .152 percent.

DUI

COAL TOWNSHIP - Trooper Jared Mowen of state police at Stonington charged Carl A. Marchetti, 55, of 453 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin, with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, a turn signal violation and careless driving involving an Aug. 24 traffic stop at Howard and Wabash streets.

Police reported a preliminary breath test indicated Marchetti's blood-alcohol content to be .038 percent. Police said Marchetti also had flexeril (a muscle relaxer), ethanol, adderall and marijuana in his blood system.

DUI

SHAMOKIN - William T. Bacas, 50, of 520 E. Dewart St., Shamokin, was charged by Trooper Jared Mowen of state police at Stonington with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, three turn signal violations and careless driving.

The charges relate to an Aug. 16 incident at East Cameron and Dewart streets.

Police said Bacas had a blood-alcohol content of .122 percent.

Theft

SHAMOKIN - Patrolman Shane Mowery has charged Fabian Roque, 34, of 911 N. Vine St., Shamokin, with theft and receiving stolen property.

Roque is accused of stealing a Dewalt hammer drill valued at $600, two sets of keys and numerous credit cards from a vehicle owned by Steve Searls. Police said the theft occurred between 11 p.m. Sept. 10 and 4:30 a.m. Sept. 11 in the 900 block of North Vine Street.

Corruption of minors

SHAMOKIN - Keysha Shoff, 34, of 242 S. Pearl St., Shamokin, has been charged by Patrolman Raymond Siko II with corruption of minors, selling or furnishing alcohol and allowing an unauthorized person to drive.

Police reported Shoff allegedly provided alcohol to two 17-year-old males and allowed an unlicensed 17-year-old male to drive her vehicle between 11 p.m. Aug. 7 and 12:22 a.m. Aug. 8.

Crash

CATAWISSA - State police report Jeremy L. Miller, 29, of Catawissa, was uninjured after the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving on Old Reading Road crashed 279 feet north of Route 405 at approximately 3:45 a.m. Friday.

Trooper John Bradley said Miller was traveling north when he drove off the roadway and struck a concrete wall. He was cited for failing to stay in his lane.

Liquor law violation

COAL TOWNSHIP - The state Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement cited Springfield Banquet Hall Inc., 21 Sherman St., with failing to return a liquor license to the board after the establishment closed.

Crash

COAL TOWNSHIP - A Shamokin man suffered minor injuries to his head in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of West Pine and Poplar streets at around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Patrolman Chad Yoder said Harold Smith, 77, of Shamokin, was traveling west on Pine Street when he failed to stop at a stop sign, causing him to strike David Moore, 72, of Coal Township.

Moore was taken by ambulance to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Hospital for minor head injuries, Yoder said. Smith's Honda Accord and Moore's 2004 Suzuki sedan both sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene.

Charges are pending against Smith, Yoder said.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Patrolman Matthew Hashuga filed retail theft charges for alleged incidents in the Coal Township Walmart against the following suspects:

- Mallary Shingara, 27, of Shamokin, for allegedly taking $23.64 worth of merchandise July 19.

- Cara Yuskoski, 26, of Mount Carmel, for allegedly taking $42.88 worth of merchandise July 29.

Crash

CASS TOWNSHIP - Two men were injured in a crash that occurred on Highridge Park Road shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, police said.

Police said Bruce J. Moyer, 28, of Schuylkill Haven, was turning left onto Keystore Boulevard in a 1996 Subaru Impreza when he struck a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Paul Fetterolf, 59, of Ashland, who had been traveling straight through the intersection.

The impact caused the Silverado to spin and slide southeast, where it struck and went atop a raised traffic island, police said.

Police said Fetterolf was moderately injured and taken to the hospital. Moyer suffered a minor injury.

Theft charges

COAL TOWNSHIP - Patrolman Matthew Hashuga has charged Diana Taylor, 25, of Shamokin, with theft and retail theft for incidents at Walmart Supercenter.

On July 8 and July 9, Taylor allegedly stole $29 worth of merchandise. On July 24, she is accused of removing $200 in cash from a register while she was working at the store.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Irene Wolfe, 25, of Sunbury, was charged by Patrolman Matthew Hashuga with retail theft for allegedly making a fraudulent return of merchandise valued at $249 at Walmart Supercenter July 30.

Keys found

COAL TOWNSHIP - A set of keys was found in the area of Route 225 (Trevorton Road) Friday.

The owner of the keys is urged to contact Coal Township police at 570-644-0333.

Missing person

EAST BRUNSWICK TOWNSHIP - State police at Frackville are searching for Charles J. Koncsler, 33, who was reported missing by a family member Sunday.

Police said Koncsler traveled Joe's E.Z. Pull Auto Parts with two other people and at some point left their company. Police reported Koncsler couldn't be located on the premises.

Police said Koncsler, who has his head shaved, is six feet tall and weighs approximately 190 pounds. He has blue eyes. His natural hair color is brown.

Harassment

UPPER MAHANOY TOWNSHIP - A 30-year-old Upper Mahanoy Township man and a 28-year-old male will be cited by state police at Stonington for harassment involving a disturbance at 5:18 p.m. Saturday at 165 Peach Tree Lane.

Police did not release the identities of the accused.

Motorcycle crash

SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP - Brian P. Dugan, 39, of Ashland, suffered a moderate injury in a motorcycle crash early Sunday at 347 Badmans Hill Road off Route 61 and was transported by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

State police at Stonington said Dugan was driving a Harley-Davidson Soft Tail cycle east at 12:15 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a sharp right curve, causing an accident.

Dugan was listed in serious condition Monday, according to a Geisinger spokeswoman.

He was cited for driving at an unsafe speed and an investigation is continuing.

Rig pulls down wires

JORDAN TOWNSHIP - State police at Stonington reported a tractor-trailer hauling a bulldozer pulled down a power line Thursday morning at the intersection of Klingerstown Road and Church Road.

Police, who did not identify the driver, said the accident occurred at 11:47 a.m. while the operator was traveling south on Church Road and making a right turn to head west on Klingerstown Road. Upon seeing wires in the middle of the road, police said the operator pulled off to the side of the road.

After the power lines came down, they broke, causing bricks to come off the side of a church.

A witness told police he noticed the power lines had been hanging very low a couple days before the accident.

Police said the 2002 Freightliner, which was at its legal height, sustained damage.

Citations issued

COAL TOWNSHIP - Code Enforcement Officer Chris Petrovich has cited Christopher J. Rumfelt, of 2 S. Franklin St., Shamokin, for not acquiring an occupancy permit and reporting a change in occupancy within 10 days for a property at 1525 W. Walnut St. that he manages for George Atiyeh, of Mount Carmel.

Burglary

JORDAN TOWNSHIP - State police at Stonington are investigating a burglary that occurred at 2 a.m. Friday at 1201 Hooflander Road.

Police said someone entered an unlocked porch door to gain access to the home and broke the screen door and main house door. At this time, the 21-year-old female homeowner, who was not identified by police, woke up and came downstairs. The burglar then fled in a dark vehicle.

Total damage to the residence is approximately $200.

Realtor signs stolen

SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP - State police at Stonington reported someone stole three Square Diehl Realty Inc. signs from the intersection of Route 61 and Lilac Road between Sept. 12 and Sept. 16.

The signs are valued at $125.

Flashing light removed

LOWER AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP - State police at Stonington said a PennDOT LED flashing light from a cone in a construction zone along Dornsife Mountain Road was stolen Sept. 16.

Runaway

SUNBURY - Foster parent Sandy Kay Bingaman, 60, of 211 Bassett Road, Sunbury, reported a male juvenile ran away from her home at 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

State police at Stonington are continuing their search for the teen.

Simple assault

RANSHAW - Dane E. Albertson Jr., 29, of 217 Third St., Ranshaw, was charged by Coal Township Patrolman David Sage with simple assault and harassment involving a domestic disturbance Sept. 13.

According to a criminal complaint filed at the office of Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III, Albertson is accused of punching his live-in girlfriend, Kirsten Gates, in the face, knocking her to the ground and dragging her along Third and Water streets. Gates suffered multiple injuries and was treated at the scene by AREA Services personnel before being transported to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where she underwent emergency room treatment before being released.

Albertson was arraigned Monday by Gembic and released on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Multiple offenses

MOUNT CARMEL - Patrick A. Pitts, 18, of 338 S. Pear St., Mount Carmel, has been charged by three different borough officers with drug-related offenses.

Pitts is charged by Patrolman Justin Stelma with possessing spice and foil smoking pipes Aug. 27 at his home. He is charged by Patrolman William Adamski with possessing spice and a cellophane cigarette wrapper Aug. 29 on South Pear Street. Pitts also is charged by Lt. Christopher Buhay with possessing a foil smoking pipe with burnt spice residue at his residence Aug. 30.

Fire call

MOUNT CARMEL - Fire personnel responded to a call Monday morning at 133 N. Oak St. involving a wood burner that malfunctioned, causing the house to fill with smoke.

Captain Jim Williams, of Anthracite Fire Company, reported Richard Ferri, of Mount Carmel, the owner of the house who is remodeling the property, was burning wood when the incident occurred. The call initially was reported as a first-alarm dwelling fire, but Williams said damage was contained to the wood burner.

Mount Carmel Code Enforcement Officer Robin Williams said the damper on the wood burner will need to be replaced before it can be operated. He said Ferri is in compliance with all building codes.

Also responding were members of Clover Hose Company, firefighter Jack Williams Sr., Lt. Chris Buhay and Mount Carmel Township Police Chief Brian Hollenbush.

Drug paraphernalia

KULPMONT - William A. Griffiths, 22, of 936 Chestnut St., Kulpmont, was charged by Police Chief Michael Pitcavage with possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct relating to a Sept. 1 incident at his home.

Police said Griffiths, who was playing music loudly, possessed a hollow pen containing white powder residue commonly used to inhale pills.

Theft charges

MOUNT CARMEL - Brian G. Madden Jr., 22, of 255 W. Saylor St., Atlas, was charged by Patrolman William Adamski with theft, receiving stolen property and public drunkenness involving a Sept. 1 incident.

Police reported Madden allegedly stole a tip jar containing $20.39 from the Vine Street Sandwich Shop.

Two injured

VALLEY TOWNSHIP - Two Marion Heights residents were injured in a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Continental Boulevard and Valley West Road in this Montour County township.

State police at Milton reported Cainen J. McAllister, 21, of Danville, was making a left turn from McCracken Run Road onto Continental Boulevard at 2:42 p.m. when he pulled his 1997 Nissan Maxima into the path of a 2004 Ford Explorer operated by Charlotte J. Sarisky, 18, of Marion Heights, resulting in a collision. Sarisky was traveling west on Continental Boulevard in the left lane when the accident occurred.

Two passengers in Sarisky's vehicle, Lynn A. Sarisky, 44, and Barbara M. Zanuck, 72, both of Marion Heights, suffered injuries and were transported by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Both drivers and another passenger in Sarisky's Explorer, Allison M. Sarisky, 23, of Marion Heights, escaped injury.

Asleep at the wheel

CATAWISSA - A Mount Carmel woman suffered minor injuries early Sunday morning in a one vehicle accident near the intersection of West Hillcrest Drive, Catawissa.

State Police at Bloomsburg reported Amber N. Kogut, 18, was traveling north on State Route 487, River Hill Drive, when she failed to negotiate a left turn in the roadway after she fell asleep. She exited the right side of the road striking a tree with the front of her vehicle. Her 2005 Toyota Highlander sustained heavy front end damage and was towed from the scene. Kogut, who was wearing her seatbelt, was transported to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment.

DUI, heroin charges

COAL TOWNSHIP - Jared Robert Paul Stover, 26, of 3614 Upper Road, Shamokin, was charged by Patrolman Terry Ketchem Jr. with driving under the influence of laorzepam (a metabolite of heroin), possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia relating to a Sept. 2 incident on Route 61 near Tharptown.

Police found bags of heroin in Stover's shoe, several heroin wrappers containing residue and bottle caps used to prepare heroin to be injected into the body.

Trevorton Road accident

COAL TOWNSHIP - One injury was reported in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning on Trevorton Road (Route 225).

Coal Township police said Sharon A. Kitchen, of 531 S. Eighth St., Shamokin, was stopped in the southbound lane in her 2003 Jeep Liberty at 8:45 a.m. waiting to make a left turn into the east entrance of Mountain View: A Nursing and Rehabilitation Center when a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo operated by Danielle N. Avellino, of 400 Warsaw St., Marion Heights, struck the rear of Kitchen's vehicle.

Kitchen complained of back pain and was transported by AREA Services Ambulance to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where she underwent emergency room treatment before being released. Avellino was not injured.

Avellino's car sustained severe damage and was towed. Kitchen's Jeep Liberty sustained moderate damage.

Avellino was cited by police for following a vehicle too closely.

Also assisting were Coal Township Fire Chief Russ Feese and members of Forest Hills Fire Company.

David V. Brzostowski, 56, of 322 N. Oak St., Mount Carmel, pleaded guilty to harassment and public drunkenness and was ordered to pay a fine and costs totaling $404.50. A charge of possession of drug paraphernalia was withdrawn.

Brzostowski was charged by Mount Carmel Lt. Christopher Buhay in connection with an Aug. 20 incident at his home.

Robert R. Lawson, 50, of 139 Centre St., Apt. 1, Ashland, pleaded guilty to restrictions on alcoholic beverages and was ordered to pay a fine and costs totaling $143.50. Charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia were withdrawn.

Lawson was charged by Mount Carmel Township Kelly Campbell in connection with an Aug. 11 vehicle stop on top of the Natalie Mountain (Route 54).

Restitution made

MOUNT CARMEL - Charges of deceptive business practices and theft filed by Mount Carmel Township Police Chief Brian Hollenbush against Joseph T. McGinley, 51, of 233 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, were withdrawn Wednesday at the office of Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones when the defendant made restitution in the case.

Police said McGinley was accused of receiving $3,520 from Sherry Doyle on Dec. 20, 2011, for repair work at a residence at 201 Wood St., Atlas, that he never completed.

Assault charges

MOUNT CARMEL - Ronald W. Barron, 37, of 308 N. Maple St., Mount Carmel, was charged by Lt. Christopher Buhay with two counts of simple assault and one count of harassment and unlawful restraint involving a Sept. 2 disturbance at his residence.

According to a criminal complaint filed at the office of Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones, Barron is accused of grabbing his girlfriend, Amy Carlin, throwing her into a counter and across the room onto a floor, choking her and holding her head down while yelling into her ear.

Carlin, who resides at 400 W. Third St., Apt. 2, Mount Carmel, suffered injuries to her head, ankles and wrist, police said.

Vehicle smashed

CENTRALIA - State police at Bloomsburg said unknown actors smashed the right side of a vehicle owned by Trevor Johnson, of Wilburton, while it was parked along North Street in Centralia between 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Drug charges

MOUNT CARMEL - Emilio T. Spurgeon, 26, of 307 N. Turnpike St., Mount Carmel, has been charged by Patrolman Jason Drumheller with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia relating to an Aug. 17 incident at his home.

DUI charges

MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP - Ryan J. Little, 18, of 144 Horvath Drive, Elysburg, has been charged by Patrolman David Tomtishen with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding involving an Aug. 15 incident at the intersection of Route 61 and School Street at Strong.

Police said Little, who was traveling at 56 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone, was driving under the influence of synthetic marijuana.

Multiple charges

MOUNT CARMEL - George L. Stankiewicz, 40, of 9 S. Walnut St., Mount Carmel, was charged by Patrolman Matthew Dillman with criminal attempt to commit burglary, criminal attempt to commit criminal trespass, stalking, loitering and prowling at night, invasion of privacy, disorderly conduct and harassment.

The charges relate to an Aug. 31 late-night disturbance in which Stankiewicz was observed on the roof of a residence at 13 S. Walnut St. Police said Stankiewicz attempted to enter the home occupied by Jordann Bridy and her small child, who were alarmed by the incident.

Hinders apprehension

MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP - Candace M. Bucher, 31, of 409 E. Fifth St., Mount Carmel, has been charged by Patrolman Kelly Campbell with hindering apprehension, receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia relating to a July 26 incident on Route 54 between the former Boylan's garage and Brennan's Farm Road.

Police said Bucher was a passenger on an ATV operated by an unidentified male that was stopped by Campbell. Police said the driver fled into a wooded area and Bucher refused to identify him. Police reported the ATV was stolen from David Lamb, of North Vine Street, Mount Carmel.

Police found three syringes and two glass smoking devices on Bucher's possession.

An investigation is continuing.

Mount Carmel Patrolman Matthew Dillman charged Bucher with possession of drug paraphernalia in an unrelated Aug. 20 incident at Poplar and Cherry streets in which she was found with two blue glassine heroin bags.

Four complaints

MOUNT CARMEL - Borough police have filed four criminal complaints involving theft and drug charges against Joseph C. Shoup, 31, of 222 Ogden St., Girardville.

Shoup is charged by Police Chief Todd Owens with two counts each of theft and receiving stolen property in connection with vehicle break-ins July 24 and July 25 in the 100 and 200 blocks of South Locust Street.

He also is charged by Patrolman William Adamski with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, misbranding a controlled substance, retail theft and public drunkenness relating to a July 25 incident at Turkey Hill Minit Market, 130 E. Fifth St., in which he allegedly stole multiple items from the store.

Adamski also charged Shoup with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana involving a July 26 incident in the 500 block of East Fifth Street.

Court matters

SUNBURY - Scott Cronce was sentenced Thursday by President Judge William H. Wiest to 27 to 72 months in a state correctional facility and to pay fines totaling $1,250 on charges of possession with intent to deliver heroin and one count of DUI in two cases.

Kevin Romine pleaded guilty to harassment Thursday and was sentenced by Wiest to 45 days in Northumberland County Prison.

Drug paraphernalia

MOUNT CARMEL - A charge of possession of drug paraphernalia was filed by borough police against Joseph Rodney McClain-Broden, 26, of 215 E. Saylor St., Atlas.

McClain-Broden is accused of possessing a smoking pipe at 36 N. Vine St. Aug. 29.

Defiant trespass

SHAMOKIN - Jason J. Ruskuski, 35, of 3 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin, was cited by Patrolman Raymond Siko II for defiant trespass and disorderly conduct involving an incident at 11:40 a.m. Thursday in the first block of South Shamokin Street.

Police reported Ruskuski was involved a fight and ran from police through several yards.

Drug paraphernalia

SHAMOKIN - Robert Kaminski, 23, of 30 N. Vine St., Mount Carmel, was charged by Patrolman Matthew Dillman with possession of drug paraphernalia relating to an Aug. 20 incident at Poplar and Cherry streets.

Drug offenses

RIVERSIDE - Amber Lynn Esser, 22, of 118 R. Foust St., Danville, was charged by Officer Jennifer Goss with possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with a Sept. 2 incident at 604 Ave. D.

Police reported Esser used a homemade device made out of a pen and socket to smoke marijuana in the presence of her four-month-old and two-year-old children.

Huffing

COAL TOWNSHIP - William Griffiths, 32, of 936 Chestnut St., Kulpmont, has been charged by Coal Township police with illegal use of certain solvents and noxious substances for an incident that took place at about 2:45 a.m. Sept. 6 at the entrance road to Walmart. Police said Griffiths was seen running around the area with no shirt on and yelling that he was bitten by bees.

Police reported Griffiths was found to be in possession of two aerosol cans of Ultra Duster cleaner that he previously purchased at Walmart, and one of the cans was empty.

East Cameron crash

EAST CAMERON TOWNSHIP - Melvin R. Brown, 23, of Shamokin, will be cited by Pennsylvania State Police at Stonington with driving too fast for conditions as a result of an accident that occurred at 6:29 a.m. Saturday on Route 125 in East Cameron Township.

According to Trooper Nathan Meissner, Brown's vehicle was going north on Route 125 when the driver failed to negotiate a right curve. The vehicle crossed the center line and soundbound lane, left the highway and struck an embankment. The trooper reported Brown left the accident scene.

COAL TOWNSHIP - Chris Petrovich, Coal Township code enforcement officer, reported citations have been issued against:

- Donald Kuntz, of 45 W. Fifth St., Mount Carmel, for a property located at 1405 W. Walnut St. Kuntz was cited for high brush, grass and weeds.

- Quisqueya Reynoso, of 2070 Seward Ave., Bronx, N.Y., for properties located at 1606 Tioga St. and 1608 Tioga St. for brush, grass and weeds.

Vehicle accident

COAL TOWNSHIP - Coal Township police continue to investigate a one-vehicle accident that occurred at about 5:14 p.m. Friday in the teachers' lot at Shamokin Area High School.

According to police, Kyle Burns, 23, of Coal Township, was operating a 1994 Ford Ranger in the area of the lot when he lost control of the vehicle and drove over a guardrail and down an embankment, just off State Street. The truck proceeded across the lot into a wooded section where it came to rest.

Police said Burns was transported via AREA Services ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center with minor injuries and for further evaluation.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Beth Ellen Morgan, 42, of Mount Carmel, has been charged by Coal Township police with one count of retail theft for an incident that occurred Aug. 30 at Walmart.

Township police allege Morgan stole $205.98 worth of merchandise without paying full retail value. Police added tMorgan has three prior convictions for retail theft.

Walmart disturbance

COAL TOWNSHIP - A Shamokin man has been charged with causing a disturbance at Walmart Supercenter that involved him stealing items from the store and huffing on duster cleaner.

Peter Rory Birster, 24, of 136 S. Franklin St., is charged by Patrolman Chad Yoder with disorderly conduct, illegal use of certain solvents and retail theft relating to the July 13 incidents.

According to a criminal complaint filed at the office of Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III, Birster is accused of removing a can of electronic duster from a shelf and inhaling it, causing him to become inebriated, yell unintelligent comments and fall into the shelves, knocking over merchandise onto the floor.

Police said Birster also stole a flashlight from the store and threw it under a vehicle in the parking lot.

He was taken into custody by police in a car in the parking lot at Walmart. Birster was later released to the custody of his girlfriend, Amanda Bebenek, who was in the car with him in the parking lot but wasn't charged.

Burglary

PAXINOS - State police at Stonington are investigating a burglary that occurred between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday at the residence of Kyle Bradigan, of 1488 Cherry St.

State police reported an unknown person entered a bedroom window from outside the ranch home. The burglar went through a lock box and removed a $20 bill. A cell phone was also taken. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at 570-286-5601.

No injuries

SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP - Jonathan T. Hoffman, 30, of Paxinos, was not injured Sept. 21 when his car swerved and hit a tree after a deer ran onto the roadway.

State police at Stonington reported the accident occurred on Dogwood Road. Hoffman was wearing a seat belt, state police said.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Stephanie Knorr, 28, of Mount Carmel, has been charged by Coal Township police with a third-degree felony count for an incident that occurred at Walmart Aug. 17.

Police allege Knorr stole $108.06 worth of merchandise without paying full retail value. Knorr has four prior convictions for retail theft, police said.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Nathan Klemick, 21, of 222 Second St., Wilburton, and Bethany Lightstone, 20, of 68 N. Lehigh St., Frackville, will be cited for retail theft, Coal Township police said.

Charges stem from an incident at Walmart on Sunday.

According to township police, Klemick placed MTG cards, valued at $57.96 down his pants and attempted to walk out of the store without paying for them. Police said Lightstone placed various DVDs valued at $132.54 down her pants and also attempted to leave the store without paying for the merchandise.

Citations were filed through Magisterial District Judge John Gembic's office.

Harassment

SHAMOKIN - Lorraine Pease, 52, of 304 N. Vine St., Shamokin, was cited by Patrolman Scott Weaver for harassment for allegedly pushing Aaron Shafer and throwing a wheel bearing that struck Shafer in the shoulder at 3:25 p.m. Sept. 23 in the 300 block of North Vine Street.

Public drunkenness

SHAMOKIN - Caitlin I. Bitler, 26, of 343 S. Diamond St., Shamokin, was cited twice by city police for public drunkenness within 24 hours.

Bitler was cited by Patrolman William Miner in connection with an incident at 1:48 a.m. Friday at Turkey Hill Minit Market on Lincoln Street. She also was cited by Cpl. Jarrod Scandle for an incident at 10:36 p.m. Friday at Spruce and Market streets that required emergency medical services personnel to treat her.

Dog owner cited

SHAMOKIN - Brenda Keller, 51, of 331 S. Rock St., Shamokin, was cited by Patrolman Scott Weaver for allowing her dogs to run off her property onto another property and bite Al Golden, who was cutting grass.

Police said the incident occurred at 3:15 p.m. Sept. 23.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Christopher E. Ransel, 47, of 236 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin, was charged by Patrolman Matthew Hashuga with retail theft for allegedly stealing $274.95 in merchandise from Walmart Supercenter between June 28 and July 20.

Car overturns

COOPER TOWNSHIP - A cat was blamed for the cause of a one-vehicle accident in this Montour County township at 3:40 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

State police at Milton said Sarah E. Wallich, 29, of Watsontown, was traveling east on Bloom Road when she said she was distracted by a cat under her feet. While she was looking down, the 2001 Mercury Sable she was driving left the roadway on the south berm. Wallich attempted to counter steer, but lost control, causing her car to go sideways. The front passenger side struck a ditch, causing the car to overturn and stop in a ditch facing west.

Wallich was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with unknown injuries, but two minor passengers, a two-year-old male and an eight-year-old female, escaped injury.

Wallich is being charged with careless driving by Trooper Maxwell Andres.

Retail theft

COAL TOWNSHIP - Jeffrey Cosgrove, 48, of Coal Township, has been cited by Coal Township Patrolman Matthew Hashuga for retail theft. Cosgrove allegedly stole $59.97 worth of merchandise from Walmart of Coal Township without paying full retail price Sept. 7.

Vandalism

SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP - A window leading to the basement of Ash Grove United Methodist Church, Lilac Road, was smashed sometime between 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, said state police at Stonington. An unknown person used an object to break the window. The act of vandalism is being investigated by Trooper Nathan R. Messner.

Juveniles cited

MOUNT CARMEL - Three female juveniles from Mount Carmel, ages 13, 14 and 15, were charged by Cpl. David Donkochik with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct involving a 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 incident.

Police said the juveniles are accused of spreading paint over various areas including buildings, vehicles and streets.

Constable assaulted

MOUNT CARMEL - A 17-year-old male from Mount Carmel was charged by Lt. Christopher Buhay with aggravated assault, simple assault, obstructing administration of the law, disorderly conduct and harassment involving a 1 p.m. Sept. 21 disturbance in the 100 block of South Oak Street.

Police said the teen allegedly assaulted state Constable Larry Rompallo while he was attempting to take the juvenile's mother into custody. Rompallo suffered injuries in the assault, police said.

Megan's Law violation

SHAMOKIN - Justin M. Wyland, 29, of 104 Second St., Ranshaw, was charged by Cpl. Christopher Hill of the Pennsylvania State Police Computer Crime Unit with a felony of failing to comply with Megan's Law registration requirements.

Wyland is accused of failing to notify state police of posts on his Facebook page.

He was arraigned Thursday by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III and committed to Snyder County Prison in lieu of $25,000 cash bail. He later posted bail and was released from prison.

Simple assault

SHAMOKIN - James Vanness Jr., 23, of 203 E. Dewart St., Shamokin, was charged Thursday by Patrolman William Miner with simple assault, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and harassment relating to a disturbance at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at 189 E. Dewart St.

Vanness is accused of threatening to kill Chelsea Swartzlander, smashing items in her home, punching a door and banging a chair into the walls. Police said the disturbance stemmed from an argument Vanness had with Swartzlander over a dog.

Police said Vanness also shouted and cursed.

Vanness was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III and committed to Montour County Prison in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.

Drug charges

MOUNT CARMEL - Patrolman William Adamski has charged Ryan E. Clews, 26, of 1501 Centre St., Ashland, with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and flight to avoid apprehension involving an incident at 11:22 a.m. Tuesday at Second and Oak streets.

Following a pursuit, police found 15 blue glassine bags, a few of which contained small amounts of a white powdery substance.

Clews was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones and committed to Snyder County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Drug offenses

MOUNT CARMEL - Anthony M. Leggins, 28, of 14 E. Avenue, Mount Carmel, was charged by Chief of Police Todd Owens and Patrolman Matthew Dillman with delivery of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, criminal use of a communication facility, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of criminal conspiracy.

The charges relate to an incident at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of South Orange Street in which Leggins allegedly sold synthetic marijuana for $70 to an informant. Leggins also is accused of possessing three acetaminophen and oxycodone hydrochloride tablets.

MOUNT CARMEL - Six defendants pleaded guilty Wednesday to multiple charges and were ordered by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones to pay fines and costs.

- Neil E. Swatsky, 32, of 211 S. Poplar St., Mount Carmel, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs and placed on probation for 6 months.

An additional charge of possession of suboxone was withdrawn.

Swatsky was charged by Mount Carmel Cpl. David Donkochik in connection with a July 16 incident in the 200 block of South Poplar Street.

- Matthew S. Moyer, 20, of Boyertown, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs and placed on probation for 12 months.

Charges of criminal trespass and possession of a small amount of marijuana were withdrawn.

Moyer was charged by Mount Carmel Township Patrolman Kelly Campbell in connection with an Aug. 23 incident in an area known as "The Slopes" off Route 901 between Locust Gap and Locust Summit.

- Tyler W. Davis, 25, of Danville, pleaded guilty to theft and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs and placed on probation for 12 months.

Additional charges of possessing credit cards belonging to Sharon and Gerald Boyer and receiving stolen property were withdrawn.

The charges filed by Riverside police officer Jennifer Goss relate to incidents between Aug. 3 and Aug. 7 at 7 Boyce Road, Riverside.

- Joseph R. McClain-Broden, 26, of 215 E. Saylor St., Atlas, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs and placed on probation for 12 months.

McClain-Broden was charged by Mount Carmel police relating to an Aug. 29 incident at 36 N. Vine St.

- Kasey Lee Starr, 24, of 501 E. Fifth St., Mount Carmel, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs and placed on probation for 12 months.

Charges of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of driving under suspension, driving without a license, driving without insurance, failure to carry and exhibit a registration card, a lighting violation and failure to wear a seat belt were withdrawn.

- Zachary Allen Starr, 30, of 14 E. Avenue, Mount Carmel, also pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs and placed on probation for 12 months. Additional charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a small amount of marijuana were withdrawn.

The Starrs were charged by Mount Carmel Township Patrolman David Tomtishen relating to a July 22 incident at the Viaduct on Route 61.
